Beaufort County School District (BCSD) invites students, families, staff, and the greater community to provide perspectives on student cellphone usage.

At a joint Student Improvement Council (SIC) Board of Education (BOE) Meeting in March, SIC members brought up concerns regarding the impact of student cellphone usage. Upon subsequent BOE discussions on the topic, they directed Dr. Rodriguez to explore possible revisions to the current administrative regulation surrounding the use of electronic communications devices in our schools.

As part of this exploratory process to ensure all stakeholders’ perspectives are heard, BCSD is seeking community feedback/thoughts regarding student cellphone usage. The cellphone usage feedback forum will be open through June 5, 2024.

BCSD is proactively preparing for potential state guidance on the topic as legislators in Columbia are also currently debating the issue. Budget bills already passed by the SC Senate and House of Representatives include a provision that would require districts to adopt a policy stopping students from using unauthorized electronic devices during school hours.
